In Summary

Avatar: The Last Airbender is largely recognized as one of the greatest animated shows of all time. In 2018, Netflix announced its plans to bring the gang back in a live-action adaptation. While many fans were intrigued to revisit the beloved show and its characters, most are rightfully worried. M. Night Shyamalan directed The Last Airbender in 2010 and brought viewers a horrendous remake of the first season. Netflix was also forced to cancel the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop after receiving mixed reviews. We will save our final opinions until after the release, but until then, here is all we know about the live-action show.

Release

Netflix announced in 2018 but has yet to confirm a release date for the highly-anticipated show. The production for the show was supposed to start in 2019, was delayed until 2020, and then was delayed further because of the pandemic.

According to Variety, the production began at the end of 2021 and should get fans excited about more news. With today’s technology and Netflix’s seemingly large budget, we can expect some great effects from the show. Any update for the show is yet to be announced, but the show could premiere by the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.

Characters and Cast

In August 2021, the casting of the four main characters was announced. Gordon Cormier will play 12-year-oldAang, the Avatar destined to bring an end to the war. Kiawentiio will take on the role ofKatara, a waterbender from the water tribe. Ian Ousley will take on the role of Sokka, Katara’s brother. Prince Zuko will be brought to the screen by Dallas Liu. The casting choices are very exciting as it confirms that the characters are not being aged for the live-action adaptation and they are very inclusive.

The casting choices continue to hit the mark with the superstar Daniel Dae Kim, playing the ruthless Fire Lord Ozai, leader of the Fire Nation. Additionally, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, from Kim’s Convenience, will play Uncle Iroh, Zuko’s Guardian as he searches the world for the Avatar. Ken Leung has been cast to play General Zhao and Lim Kay Siu will portray Gyatso, Aang’s mentor, and fellow Airbender.

One of the issues with M. Night Shyamalan’s casting was that it was majorly white, except for Dev Patel as Zuko. The animated series is highly influenced by East Asia and Inuit tribes, neither of which were representedin the movie. The original series creators made their intentions clear from the beginning, stating that they would be bringing a much more inclusive and culturally-appropriate cast to play the majority of the roles.

Plot

The original Netflix show follows the story of Aang, the Avatar, who is found frozen in a block of ice by Katara and her brother Sokka, of the water tribe. It is revealed that Aang had been frozen for a hundred years and the majority of the war that is being raged upon the world by the Fire Nation. Prince Zuko is hunting down the Avatar after his father exiled him from the Fire Nationfor speaking out of turn.

The fictional world is divided into four nations, each of which corresponds to a certain element which are air, water, earth, and fire. Aang learns that he will have to fight the Fire Lord before the arrival of Sozin’s comet if he is to rid the world of his terror and destruction. The year-long adventure follows his growth as he learns how to waterbend, earthbend, and firebend, as the Avatar is the only human who can master the bending of all four elements.
